::RECAP:: 8th ANNUAL DC LOVES DILLA

Last Wednesday at The Howard Theatre, DC witnessed a musical tribute that was worthy of televised viewing. HedRush designed an extraordinary line up of talent that gave worthy tributes to the gone too soon producer James "J.D." "J. Dilla" Yancy. I am more than convinced that MTV or VH1 could not have done a better job manifesting this epic presentation.

The appropriately titled DC Loves Dilla tribute event and fundraiser set a high bar for its 8th year with performances by De La Soul, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Bilal, Oddisee, Musinah, Maimouna Youssef, Gypsy Soul Aural Advocacy artists Yahzarah and Sunstantial, Awethentic, X.O., Wes Felton and more backed by Jon Laine and The Players and background vocals by two artist we love, Alison Carney and J. Hill, with host Grap Luva.

One of the highlights of the night was hometown hero Oddisee who traveled from New York to participate in the DC tribute to Dilla. Ive never seen him live and it was awesome being able to have my primer at this super hype event.

The other performer I had been STOKED to see was Miguel Atwood Ferguson. His innovation of Suite For Ma Dukes by placing an 60 piece orchestra behind the production of J. Dilla was genius. Miguel has played many shows in the West but the East has been yearning for his rendition of Dilla and he finally delivered!

The last MAIN highlight was De La Soul. Being able to see "Stakes Is High" performed live was a tick off the bucket list for many of the hip hop head in the crowd. It was PERFECT. Thanks to the new Instagram video app you can catch a few seconds of the legendary performance HERE.

We would like to thank Munch and his team for providing access to our team to once again support and capture the DC Loves Dilla Tribute series. To view more photos of the event please click HERE
