::HEADPHONE JUNKIE:: HEZEKIAH REMINDS US THAT "DREAMS DON'T CHASE THEMSELVES"

Hezekiah is a name that most headphone junkies are familiar with. Whether it's through previous albums like Hurry Up and Wait or I Predict A Riot or through his work with artists like Bilal, Eric Roberson and Zap Mama, Hezekiah has made a name for himself as a premier producer, emcee, musician and singer.

Preparing to release his fourth album, Dreams Don't Chase Themselves, Hezekiah proves that his title choice is much more than an idiom that just sounded good. This album is the fruit of hard work and dedication rarely seen in today's music scene.

During an album preview last year, Hezekiah said, "People think things come easy. They don't come easy, they come from hard work and dedication." This album definitely puts that into practice. Hezekiah is responsible for the albums production and writing and there are no other emcees on this album. Both are a first for Hezekiah. In addition, this album is his first album without a record label and all of the perks that tend to come with having a label backing. Not a problem for Hezekiah though.

Dreams Don't Chase Themselves is true, honest and transparent. Hezekiah isn't preoccupied with throwing songs together for the sake of making a deadline or trying to sound like what's hot to ensure Top 40 spins (although, that wouldn't be a terrible idea). Dreams Don't Chase Themselves has its own voice, its own style, something this is missing from present day Hip Hop.

This album shows that Hezekiah was determined to create a true work of art and not just another rap album. Songs like "Don't Get In Your Way," "Lets Network," and "Hologram Dreams" all have a vibe, lyrically and musically, that is reminiscent of sitting and learning from an older sibling or trusted friend. Dreams Don't Chase Themselves is nearly 60 minutes of "real talk." And in this current era of "I don't give a f***," it is really good to see that someone does, both about his music and his audience.

Dreams Don't Chase Themselves will be available Tuesday, February 10th and it should be something that every headphone junkie adds to their collection.

The annual production of DC Loves Dilla supported by Heineken is something that music lovers in the DMV look forward to every year. On the 9th Anniversary of the event several artists hit the stage to celebrate the life of J. Dilla. This year's features included Bahamadia, N'Dea Davenport, Pharoahe Monch and Phife.

Several other musical favorites were also tapped to honor J. Dilla's legacy including GRAMMY nominated artist and arts educator Kokayi, artist and arts educator Asheru, hip hop artist RAtheMC and Gods'illa, GRAMMY nominated singer and MC Maimouna Youssef, and MANY more.

Gypsy Soul was able to catch up with several of the artists to get their impressions on J.Dilla's life, music, and legacy.

If you haven't heard by now, there was a MAJOR announcement made on stage that J. Dilla will have his beat equipment added to the Smithsonian's new museum of African American History & Culture. Ma Dukes (J. Dilla's mother) along with our friend Timothy Anne Burnside of the Smithsonian made the emotional and incredible announcement.

Make sure that the first thing on your to-do list next summer is attending the 10th Annual DC Loves Dilla event. We can't even imagine the incredible production that is being dreamed up!

::Headphone Junkie:: Hezekiah Previews New Album Dreams Don't Chase Themselves
by Daniel Harris

It has been nearly four years since the release of hip hop artist Hezekiah's last album Conscious Porn and fans have been patiently waiting for his next release. This past Thursday, Hezekiah provided his fans with a preview of his much anticipated new album along with a great opportunity for fans to select the first single from the album.

Dreams Don't Chase Themselves was written and produced Hezekiah, a first for the Philly MC. Another first for him, there are no other MCs featured on the album. During the album preview, held on TwitCasting, he said that many of his critics believe that he is incapable of standing on his own on an album and how he hopes this album will end that debate.

Even with his success, Hezekiah still holds true to his soulful, raw sound. Tracks like "Once You Pick It Up" and "Hologram Dreams" hold true to the sound and the style most fans are familiar with. "The album title is what I'm going through right now" Hezekiah noted during the session. He continued to say, "People think things come easy. They don't come easy, they come from hard work and dedication."

When asked what he's learned in the time since his last release, Hezekiah said, "There's a difference in labels now and labels from back in the day...it's all digital now and they can sign anything with no investment and just upload it to iTunes." In this digital age of the music business, real talent tends to get lost in the shuffle of ringtone and club singles. After participating in last night's preview and hearing the hard work and dedication that went into creating this album, we are pretty confident that Dreams Don't Chase Themselves will be a step in the right direction to reclaim real music.

Hezekiah hopes to release Dreams Don't Chase Themselves some time this Spring. Also be on the look out for the first single and video of the crowd favorite "Hologram Dreams."

ishe + hezekiah project

she's the singer, he's the producer

ishe + hezekiah are an experimental soulful duo composed of singer/songwriter ishe' from san diego and producer/emcee/songwriter hezekiah from philadelphia.

two unique artists with an unspoken understanding of music provided the perfect ingredients. a mixture of organic classic soul, a slight touch of electronic flourishes; a beautifully-composed sonic stew with a traditional hip hop edge. timeless.

for their debut album. her hypnotic & sweet dreamy vocals over his head-knoddin' beats spawn something organic and ultra melodic. together their sound is raw and intimate ... pretty and gritty ... unorthodox and out the box!

with subject matter that covers the spectrum, ranging from social issues, love, drugs, depression, make ups and break ups... this project is something ishe + hezekiah are both proud of, and i'm sure you will be too.

take a listen to the leak : "stand guard" featured on the forthcoming album ishe +hezekiah project
