Trina Broussard recently performed background with Rahsaan Patterson in Annapolis at Ram’s Head Tavern. We had the pleasure of chatting with her after the 6 pm show. Thanks to Frank Sheffield of S.E.I Entertainment.
Shani: I loved your first song when you came out, “Inside My Love”. I had the Love Jones Soundtrack.
Trina: Love Jones, yep yep. Thanks to Mr. Jermaine Dupri and Trey Lorenz. Jermaine approached me with it and Trey Lorenz helped me arrange it and put the recording together, so I can’t take credit for it. I’m very grateful and Jermaine asked me to do it. People have discovered me through the Love Jones soundtrack cover of a Minnie Ripperton tune that I absolutely love.
Shani: So, you’re currently working on your third cd?
Trina: Yes, the new cd will be coming out either late summer or fall. The new single, “Off of My Mind” is coming in about three weeks to iTune.
Shani: What’s the name of the cd?
Trina: Life of A Libra.
Shani: So, what are you getting off of your mind?
Trina: Everything! (laughter) This single is actually about not being able to get this particular person off of my mind.
Shani: So, in 1997 you started with the Love Jones Soundtrack, you have done some songwriting, working with Aretha Franklin, how was it working with the Queen?
Trina: I didn’t get to go in and meet her. Jermaine said that he had a track for me for Aretha. I wrote it, Jermaine went to Detroit, and came out fine. Jermaine asked if I wanted to get on this track for Aretha and I was like, “Oh, yes!” Trey Lorenz and I went home and wrote that song in about fifteen minutes. We were happy about it. It’s an honor to just be connected to Aretha. I grew up listening to her; my mom introduced me to her music when I was pretty much a baby. I have loved Aretha every since and still listen to her today.
Shani: Besides singing and songwriting, I noticed that you also have credits a producer.
Trina: Mmm hmm, I have to give credit to Jermaine Dupri for allowing me to do that. He gave me creative control on my first record. I’m also going to be co-producing this third album, “Life of A Libra” with Mr. Darrell Freeman and a few other guys, like Mr. Carlos Ricketts, who’s a great songwriter/singer. He has written songs for Anita Baker, Patti LaBelle and toured with Mary J. Blige for seven years singing back up. Also, Ms. Ra-Re Valverde, who is wonderful singer/songwriter who had a song out, “Beautiful Mess”. I’ve been blessed to connect to some wonderful people who eloquently help me express my emotions.
Shani: Now, I understand us Libras. For those who don’t have the pleasure of knowing a Libra, what can they get from Life of A Libra?
Trina: Most Libras are lovers of love. We absolutely love being in love. We love beautiful things and beautiful people. We have a very strong since of character. We have a very good insight on things, but we also are strong and sensitive about things. So at this point, being 41, it’s something about when you come of age you release all the inhibitions and it’s a beautiful thing. Certain things that used to bother you now roll off your back like water. There’s more confidence than ever, you feel more beautiful than ever, even with a little roll hanging on your side. There’s just something about Libras, we love beautiful things. I just love a beautiful day, I don’t take advantage of anything that’s beautiful. If it’s raining outside, it’s still beautiful. It’s beautiful to be here and I can still sing a melody in the rain, if you have sun, or if you have snow, it doesn’t matter. With this cd, I have totally exposed myself, from sadness to happiness, to being ashamed and overcoming it. So, once again, it’s who I am. You’re going to see the real, I never cut corners of who I am, as a Libra. I can’t speak for anybody else, but that’s what I do.
