Grammy Award winner and artiste extraordinaire PJ Morton recently released his third project, titled Walk Alone. Not familiar with the soul singer? Neither was I until recently, so here’s a crash course: Among other things, PJ is a genius musician. He is a native of New Orleans, and is most definitely a preacher’s kid. Although Morton grew up in the church, he designed his own path by going on to pen for artists like India Arie, Music Soulchild, and Fred Hammond.
Receiving some backlash as a preacher’s kid and NOT labeling himself solely as a gospel singer, Morton recently released a book entitled, Why Can’t I Sing About Love? The Truth About the “Church” vs “Secular” Music (just to combat the critics). Some call it secular; others call it just good music that speaks to the heart and our everyday lives.
At my first listen of Walk Alone, the gospel influence is undeniable, but the album goes beyond that by crossing over various genres, this is a narrative of his journey as a man, a lover, and a son. Though the album is boasting with catchy pop melodies on tracks like "The One" and "Love You More", this album also reaches moments of pure compassion and healing on songs "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Mountains and Molehills". It almost makes you think--maybe this dude should be in a pulpit!
Walk Alone is thoughtfully composed, showing off his skill with the piano, arrangement, and range of vocals. What are you waiting for? Go check it out!
