Last night I ventured out to Pigstown - yes that's an actual location - here in Baltimore, to see performer Shante' Lenise at Club Reality.
Finding the venue was an adventure in itself as we traveled to a part of Baltimore we didn't even know existed, to a spot whose outside sign still has the former name "Y Not" on it. The outside reminded me of those dimly lit, "seedy" bars that you see a lot in movies, so imagine my surprise when I DIDN'T see a troop of bikers lined up on the inside! The establishment was set up as a bar when you first walk in and then a lounge off to the right, when a few booths for you to sit and enjoy food hot off the grill.
But back to the show. Shante's overall the performance for the night was pretty good. It was my first time seeing her perform but I had heard a lot about her. While she did not blow me away with ridicuously high notes and repetitive runs , her voice was at times reminiscent of Erykah Badu - definitely an influence of neo-soul, jazz and R&B in her!
Shante hopes to release her first CD later this summer - and sung a couple of songs. In my interview with her said that "Truth or Dare", a song off her upcoming cd, is the song that best represents her and her feelings about love and the things that you go through when in being in a relationship.
My favorite song she performed last night was "So Scandolous". It was an upbeat song dedicated the independent woman who "loves herself and no one else!" --- This single can definitely be the song that gives her the recognition as an up and coming. Baltimore should keep their ears open and expect to hear and see more of this young songstress and she continues to grow.
