Teedra Moses recently made a trip to Washington, D.C. and while here we were able to catch up with her to get her thoughts and to get even more familiar with this artist that Gypsy Soul loves. It has been ten years since the release of her debut album Complex Simplicity with knock out single "Be Your Girl." Loved by many for not only the skill of her song writing but also the substance and ability to connect the content of her releases to the lives of her listeners. Not to mention her vocal arrangements and layering of intricate harmonies over beats is sublime.

Since then Teedra has released a few mixtapes including The Young Hustler compilations to Royal Patience...A Love Journey and Luxurious Undergrind. Push play on the tracks below to listen to some of our favorites from over the years.

Graciously, she and her management, allowed us access to their sound check and show, along with a great interview that touched on her writing process to the new artists she has on her radar.

::RECAP:: TEEDRA MOSES AND WES FELTON AT THE HOWARD THEATRE

If the atmosphere in The Howard Theatre on Sunday, January 19^th had to be summed up in two words, “soul stirring” would have to suffice; but in all honesty words couldn’t serve the show it’s proper justice.

DC Native Wes Felton kicked off the night of R&B and soul music to a packed house with a performance truly befitting of the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Felton finessed the stage with lyrics of inspiring elevation and progression, at one point sitting on the stage Indian-style and then taking it up a notch as he sang and rapped laying down.

Mid-show, Felton took a moment to pay tribute to 34-year-old husband, father, and construction worker Travis Jackson who was struck and killed on the Suitland Parkway on January 15^th. Jackson was the founder of rock label Windian Records, and former drummer for rock group The Points. Felton’s drummer played a rousing drum highlight in honor of the late Jackson.

Felton’s performance gracefully set the mood for the R&B songstress also known as “The Young Lioness”, Teedra Moses to take the stage. Gorgeous as ever, Moses wasted no time pouring the tea, or the cognac rather, about the latest happenings of her love life. She made sure to let the crowd know that she was “fresh off a heartbreak” and jokingly but truthfully added “But I look good!”

Moses took the audience through a melodic voyage from Complex Simplicity all the way through Luxurious UnderGRIND with timeless hits like “Be Your Girl”, “Rescue Me”, “The One”, “No More Tears”, and the list goes on and on. Down to earth and refreshingly relatable, Moses’ sincerity transcended throughout the theatre.

With her signature bottle of Hennessy within arm’s reach, Moses gave the crowd a chance to indulge in Cognac & Conversations, which is also the title of her long awaited, impending 2014 release. Moses had folks on their feet with the classic “You Better Tell Her” and chanting for an encore.

The Lioness returned to the stage and closed the show out with the seemingly unanimous favorite “Backstroke”. Be on the lookout for new releases from both Wes Felton and Teedra Moses, and stay tuned to find out which of your favorite artists will be in town next!
