::EVENT ALERT:: Audible Odyssey with Emmanuel Lewis-Withers

Tuesday, January 11, 2011
0 comments

New on the scene to some while others have known him for a while, Emmanuel Withers-Lewis or better known as "Manny" will be performing @ Eden's Lounge in Baltimore, Maryland Thursday, January 13th as part of 2 AM Music's Eden's Unplugged.

Born in NY and raise here in Baltimore, Manny has an old soul and brings that old school flavor to the new era. His influences are derived from artists such as the late Marvin Gaye, Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations, Nat King Col, Minnie Ripperton, and Sam Cooke just to name a few. His "pretty boy" demeanor reminds me of Smokey Robinson back in the day (at least from the old footage I've seen). And yes, he even has the eyes like Smokey.

While he's still discovering his sound, his voice is soothing and puts your soul at ease. Reminds me of when I listen to some of the greats from Motown.

On Thursday @ Eden's Lounge in Baltimore, Manny's performance will include a few of his singles such as "Always Yours"and "Mad at You" and a few old school favs.

If your into hearing a little old and new---come out to Eden's and groove with Gypsy Soul and Manny and he brings the flava to the stage.

I can't wait to see what this new talent has to offer and what he can bring to the music game.

--Hope to see you at the event Thursday!

Leah Smith
Hailing from the streets of North Philadelphia and a product of Philadelphia’s prestigious Creative and Performing Arts High School, music has always been a part of Leah’s life. Smith gave her first vocal solo at the age of 4 and at the age of 9, began singing with the Temple University Program for Gifted Young Musicians. She began recording with the Baltimore based group Sandtown before she was even in a double digit age category and began writing songs at age 11. In 2008, Smith became the winner of the Best of Philly Rising/World Café Live Showcase and released her debut EP entitled Beautifully Made in October 2009 to rave reviews. Smith’s current single, Monster debuted at number 1 on digstation.com within its first week of sales. Singer/Songwriter/Musician Leah Smith has shared the stage with Grammy Award winning artists such as Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, and Israel Houghton. A former member of Israel Houghton and New Breed, Smith has already toured the United States, Asia, Europe, and Australia. Smith’s music offers a breath of fresh air to the music that mainstream culture has grown accustomed to. Leah Smith wants to share with her listeners that “real, living hope is accessible to all.” Her sound crosses genre barriers blending soul, gospel, pop, and folk musical styles to create a sound all her own. Smith’s debut EP entitled Beautifully Made is in stores now.

Lydia Caesar
Not your typical R&B bombshell, Lydia’s soulful yet edgy vocal ability and sultry voice are a force not to be reckoned with. A lover of many different genres of music, Lydia was introduced to rock music early on in her life. With this influence, Lydia and her producer MotesArt have created a fusion of Rock and R&B which they call "Rock&B". Lydia’s star power has garnered the crown of several New York City showcases, including Faces in the Crowd 2006 best of the best winner, the recognition of Vibe.com for her answer to Musiq Soulchild’s “Buddy,” and a 2007 Underground Music Award for best R&B female.Lydia has completed her first full-length work. Her debut album is filled with songs that sound different, and just make you feel good. Soulful vocals, over rock guitar riffs, this LP breaks the mold.

Green Tea:
Mix a serving of soul, a pinch of optimism, and a dash of heart and you get Green Tea. Not just your average soul singer, Green Tea, pours her feelings into her music. She skilfully mixes sultry soul with positive lyrics and encouraging tones that make you want another dose every time she sings. As a D.C. native, Green Tea stays true to the eclectic style that moves through the city and blends her inspirations of gospel, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, opera, and even rock and roll into her craft. She has opened up for artists such as Slick Rick, Kindred the Family Soul, Dead Prez, Chuck Brown, Fertile Ground and Anthony David and has entertained all over the East Coast, from D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, to Pennsylvania.

Kenny Wesley
He sings with the tenderness of a soul crooner, and in the same breath, with incredible agility and freedom. Kenny Wesley is the young new face of contemporary and jazz music. In May of 2008, his vision materialized with the release of his debut single, “I'm Sorry" which relates an earnest plea of forgiveness to the listener. “People have so many ulterior motives for forging relationships and friendships. I wanted a song that would convey this concept in a sincere, gentle kind of way.” His love for music and other cultures has taken him around the world where he has performed before presidents, dignitaries, heads of state, and high-profile celebrities. Kenny has opened for Anthony David and has shared the stage with several national recording artists such as Yolanda Adams, Gordon Chambers Mike Phillips, Jimmy Sommers, Vikter Duplaix, Anthony David and Jean Carne. His songs have been featured by a host of worldwide media outlets to include: ABC’s “The View”, WHUR FM, Music Choice, Clear Channel’s Discovery! New, African Rhythms (UBC Radio), 4DaSoul, SoulUnsigned, FunkyPeopleRadio, IAC, Fusions Radio, RadioIO, Candy Randy Radio, StarpointRadio.net, Street Access Radio, BounceRadio.net, Classic Soul 1075.com, WINR Radio, WBRS Radio, WDJR.net, Cross Tracks, kemetradio.com, Mallee Border Radio, WCH Radio, Good Morning Arizona!, the Holiday Magic CD Compilation, last.fm, Itunes, and the All Digital Radio Network.

Ear Candy is a musical treat for those who dare to tune down the radio, turn off the television and venture into our storehouse of audible goodies. Give-a-ways, prizes & surprises are just the sugar on top of our melodic confectionery meant only for those who seek to balance their mainstream diet with eclectic sonic sweets.

Ear Candy is not a concert, but a unique concept, an evolved listening party & performance with a simplistically sultry atmosphere that allows fans to experience rare moments as they get to know the artists they love while introducing new comers to artists they are sure to fall in love with.

Tapedeck Throwback

Live performances from legendary R&B stars who pioneered new styles of music in the 80s & 90’S and today.

Featuring

SWV, Heads of State (Johnny Gill, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant) and Silk
Friday, July 23, 2010
DAR Constitution Hall

If you need a little romance, or just a night out with the girls you do not want to miss this event! The concert aptly called Tapedeck Throwback, combines various entertainment performances with a blend of old school soul, mixed with a new school twist. The much-anticipated show promises all fans a night of fun and reminiscing!

Heads Of State was formed at the end of 2008 by New Edition members Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant & Johnny Gill. While the group is being remembered for their music history, the members are still making new moves. They are working on a new album with producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to be released towards the end of 2010.

SWV is best known for their series of hits, including "Weak", "Right Here/Human Nature" and "I'm So Into You". Silk is a five-piece R&B vocal group from Atlanta, formed under the mentorship of producer Keith Sweat. Silk topped the charts with “Freak Me” from their 1993 debut album, which itself reached the No.1 spot on both the Billboard 200 and the R&B charts.

::CENTER STAGE:: UNEMPLOYMENT LINES

This dynamic production is honored to be a part of the 1st Annual DC Black Theatre Festival and is filled with thoughtful quips and dialogue. Not to mention the abstract reality that we call life is all intertwined with the security we feel or fill within. Essentially what happens to a complete soul when their sustinance is sweeped from under them? When a generational millionaire looses it all, what truly changes? If you never had it how could you miss it? If money is the root of all evil, where does that leave broke, aspiring actors?

UNEMPLOYMENT LINES

This is the premier of our new play "Unemployment Lines" where broke actors tell rich stories about the realities of today's economic conditions on the lives of Washingtonians. It will be here for (2 days only)Sat. July 10th at 7pm and Sun. July 11th at 3pm at the H street Play house in NE Washington, DC. come check it out and bring your friends.

Marcell & The Truth
Marcell & the Truth was founded in 1997 after Marcell Russell joined a funk-rock band started by William Bagwell, aka, “Bags”. Bags ended the band shortly after Marcell joined, but felt Marcell had tons of potential, vocally and lyrically. Bags told Marcell that he had the chance to be the next “legend” in music. Bags would inspire Marcell to start his own band. Marcell saw the challenges of building a band after a few months and quit. But, the music kept calling him and he couldn’t stay away. He called Bags back up and asked if they could restart the band. Bags challenged Marcell for quitting the first time and Marcell swore he would never quit again. And there begins the recruiting, training, and developing the sound of M&TT for the next 4-5 years. Bags & Marcell didn’t get super far with their songs until Marcell ran into Charles Bennett & Gerald Richardson, September 1999, in the cafeteria of Morgan State University.
M&TT looks forward to one day signing a deal that will work for everyone. “There are some great labels that really work hard for their artists out there. We are waiting for it to be a clear fit which one is for us. This business is difficult on your own but we won’t cheat our fans with lazy music. We know it’s a matter of time”, Marcell.
Maimouna Youssef

Maimouna Youssef is a 23 year old singer, songwriter, emcee, and poet born in Baltimore MD into a family of exceptional artists. Youssef released her debut album independently at the age of 17 along with her cousin and Band mate Omari Forman-Bey. Since then she's toured around the world with the Legendary Roots Crew from Philly gracing such stages as Denver's Red Rocks Amphitheater, New York's Radio City Music Hall, New Orleans' House of Blues, The Essence Jazz Festival, South Africa's Capetown Jazz Festival, and Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival. Youssef performed lead choral vocals on the Root's Single, "Don't Feel Right," which was nominated for a Grammy in 2007 in the category of Best Rap Song. In 2008 she toured with world renowned, Belgium Congolese vocal group, Zap Mama and Sergio Mendez, and gave an outstanding performance at the Carnegie Hall. She is currently preparing to start an American/Canadian tour with Zap Mama in the summmer of 2009. Maimouna Youssef has received credits in such magazines as Vibe, USA Today and The Rolling Stone. She is currently simultaneously recording her first solo album, as well as an inspirational indigenous women's album with her family's group, "Three Generationz."

DIONNE FARRIS
Performing her hits live and debuting hits songs from her forthcoming album
On Top Of The World
with Black Alley + Leah Smith

Dionne Farris is one of the first artists of our time to create music that crossed all genres. This Grammy nominated singer/songwriter was recognized for her first top 10 smash single, “I Know”, from her critically acclaimed debut CD Wild-Seed Wild-Flower.
Dionne’s beloved hit single “Hopeless" from the movie Love Jones was an instant classic, staying at no. 1 on the Billboard R&R charts for a record 18 weeks. Dionne's voice is also heard on A.D’s. chart topping “Tennessee”.
She was the talk of the industry then, and has been since her departure. Everyone wants to know where she’s been and what she’s been up to. She’ll grace us once again this year with her appropriately titled new CD, On Top Of The World. If there’s one thing we know of Dionne and the music she makes, then we should prepare ourselves for the next level in the musical journey of The Original Soul Rocker.

Celebrate Mothers Day with Kindred The Family Soul
presented by Douglas Spencer & Tonesetters

This event is a special token of appreciation to honor women and those with special women in their lives.

KINDRED the Family Soul aka the new Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee are back on MAY 9 with their first live concert at the The Shakespeare Theatre Company and the Harman Center for the Arts in downtown Washington, DC. The act, holiday and venue are a great union for the Mother’s Appreciation Event.

KINDRED’s mission is to celebrate love, family, and endurance that keep us all moving through the world. To date, they produced three records: Surrender the Love, In this Life Together, & The Arrival. Yet, the real love story is they produced six lovely children (who are they). Their latest project is a reality series called “Six is It”, a real look into Kindred’s life over the past few months leading up to the birth of their sixth and final child (according to them). Feedback from the first webisode, question why there isn’t more of this kind of quality material on TV stations like BET, TV1 or VH1. They are also launching the new video “Just the Way You Are”

There will be live jazz performances by Brian O'Neal of Kem's band and 76 Degrees West, a Jazz/Funk band that has been lighting up stages across the U.S. since 2001. Their remake of The Average White Band's "School Boy Crush" combines instrumental jazz with go-go, creating classic D.C. magic, and Kendrick the Family Soul will perform classical soul music. Kendrick songs are based on a positive message, which spread light into everyone.

Shakespeare Theatre - Sidney Harmon Hall Doors open at 6 p.m. Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets $35 - $55
