::GET FAMILIAR:: SASKWATCH
by Daniel Harris
There is an incredible soul movement happening in Melbourne, Australia. It's being called the "Soul 2.0 Variety" movement and the land down under is enjoying the fruits of many bands being inspired by a genre that is reminiscent of days past here in the states.
At the very center of Melbourne's soul movement is Saskwatch. This nine-piece band began as street performers in Australia. Before landing a residency at Melbourne's Cherry Bar, In an interview for The Sydney Morning Herald, trumpet player and songwriter Liam McGorry says that Saskwatch spent three years covering jazz and soul favorites and sharpening their skills. While performing, they caught the ear of soul DJ Vince Peach who then booked them to play the Cherry Bar's regular soul night each week.
Listening to Liam and his crew play, you are able to hear a deep appreciation for music, more specifically, soul music. They perfectly blend deep heavy horns, rhythmic pockets and smooth guitar and bass to produce a truly authentic classic soul sound.
Nkechi Anele, lead singer, shows that she is equally passionate about the soul genre. Her powerful voice and amazing skill adds tremendously to the band's already high level of complex richness. With such a mastery of the genre, it is easy to see why much of Melbourne's soul movement centers around them.
