::BEHIND THE SCENES:: With Julie Dexter

Last week, I was asked to interview an artist that I consider to be a great example of longevity in music. Born and raised in Birmingham, England, Julie Dexter 's amazing and powerful voice has been heard the world over since 1994. Mastering styles like Bossa Nova, Soul, Jazz and Broken Beat (to name a few.), Julie transcends the normal perimeters often placed on artists.
Blues Alley

Amidst that hustle and bustle of the Georgetown Washington, D.C nightlife sits a small and intimate club dedicated to preserving the legacy of Jazz and Blues. Blues Alley (located in what many would consider an actual alleyway) has played host to many Jazz greats in its 48 year history. That night however, Blues Alley would be the setting for a night celebrating the life and music of Reggae megastar, Bob Marley featuring Julie and recording artist Heston.

A composer, arranger, singer, songwriter, Julie Dexter is steeped in music. I wanted to find out how each of these aspects have contributed to her longevity in the music business.

She says "it matters that the music reaches the people." She brought up a very interesting thought: There was a time when artists weren't so concerned about the fame. There was a time where they would jump on the road, do a show, hop back on the road and do it all over again. It was simply about creating good music and "a good vibe" as Dexter put it.

It seems the business of music has taken away this grassroots approach to creating material for the people to enjoy. As our conversation went on, I wanted to know if she's ever been approached to go "mainstream."

Julie had been such a gracious host and I really could have talked with her all night. Her insight on music and artistry are a true testament of why she's been in this business for almost two decades. I couldn't keep her though. Blues Alley began to fill with great anticipation and I could not be the reason Julie Dexter was late hitting the stage.

Before I concluded our conversation, I wanted to give her a chance to give an tips, advice or words of wisdom to up and coming artists that would maybe allow them to experience her level of sustainability in music.

Tell us what you think? What are some major downfalls in the music industry that prevent artists from forming successful and long careers? What areas should be brought back or taken away to create a sustainable environment in music? Leave your thoughts in the comment box below.

Our thanks to Julie Dexter and the good people at Blues Alley!
