A Week in Review: David James, Green Tea, Jesse Boykins III and Curt Chambers

Tuesday(May 5th), the "fiya" was blazing with Green Tea and David James as Gypsy Soul and Media Minds brought another Ear Candy featuring the artists that set Harbor East ablaze at Teavolve. David James was great. He offered the audience smooth vocal delivery that allowed them to sit back and take in the ambiance as he created a real sensorial experience. Food, music, rain drops, dim lights, wine, music, bass. His performance had the audience open to experience all the evening had to offer. The flame was lit and open they were.

Green Tea turned a blazing fire into an inferno and the night was not the same. The audience went from being laid-back and almost sensual in energy, and with a hot shot of Green Tea(the artist of course), the audience was galvanized to rock, sway, sing, clap, and cheer in excitement of what they were receiving. The bass player, Zach, had us falling head over heels with strums of his guitar. The guitarist, whose name I did not get, was feeling the atmosphere so much that he hopped in on the set and rocked out like nobody's business. The percussionist completed the experience. With every hit of the bongos it felt like a call to listen, nearly forcing us to open ourselves to the nights closer. Green Tea gave us what her name offers up in relation- energy, rejuvenation, vitamins that nourish the minds need for music that is not only wonderful to listen to but offers something meaningful. Food or liquor you ask? Both. The lyrics were the food-nourishing and replenishing the mind and soul. But man, Green Tea and the band were liquor, having us feenin' for more.

Tuesday night was awesome! In the words of Green Tea, (in the fashion of call-and-response)"FIYA!...FIYA!...FIYA!...". The week had promise.

Thursday came and it was on. Jesse Boykins III and Curt Chambers. Talk about wanting more. These two caused an explosion, revealing what has been missing in the musical arts of late- talent, skill, presence, command of attention, beautiful delivery, annndddd...they were nice to look at.

Jesse Boykins III- if you don't know him yet, you will soon. We predict he will soon be the heart throb of many more women and young ladies. Gypsy Soul was the first to bring him to Balitmore for and Charm City has made it known that they are glad to have been introduced JBIII, especially the ldaies. The place was full of women and they loved this man. With such a presence, that even in delivering the most subtly explicit of lines, "Tell me about your day while I kiss the place, [tell of the things] you hate, while I penetrate". After which, he would offer a look of naughty innocence that I translated to mean, “I know that was bad, and if you don't like it I won't do it again. But if you liked it, I will gladly give you more.” In addition to receiving what I am sure every woman in the place imagined was a personal serenade, Jesse’s band, The Beauty Created, gave us just as much to talk about has he did. Ajax was on the drums; OJ was the horn section (trumpet) and had a fan club of his own; Robby was on guitar; and Akil on bass. His set ended with a standing ovation and truly warranted laudation from novices and vets alike for the love and passion he so obviously has for his craft.

After an already overly pleasing first half, the hosts of the evening offered a chance to win some goodies. They asked if there were any “know it all's” in the audience and the Gypsy Soul crew and Drea of 88.9 WEAA apparently believe I believe I am a “know it all”. So I was obliged to participate in a very brief Q&A that simply required you pay attention to the artist. Isn’t that why we are there? So of course I was paying attention. “What was the first song Jesse Boykins performed tonight?” I am a little competitive so I may have slapped the host’s hand a little hard to let him know I had the answer within 2 seconds of asking, but what did you expect? I like to win. And I did. “Prototype, by Andre 3000, Outkast.” I won a few CD’s two of which were the cd’s Jesse BoykinsIII and The Beauty Created and a short,Curt Chambers and The Franklin Bridge and a bottle of VOSS water. It was a cool break before the whirlwind that was a about to take the stage.

The audience had a several minutes to gather themselves. It was apparent who was there for Jesse and who was there for Curt Chambers. I thought the place was clearing out. Was everyone here to see Jesse only? No. The people that left were replaced by an audience that had some of the faces from the first half but had a lot of new ones that were ready, waiting and willing to receive Curt Chambers. We sat with OJ of Jesse Boykins’ band and joked that the women that had strategically placed themselves at the sides of the stage seemed to be on the brink of an “O” from the time Curt hit the stage and finally had their release when the show was over and strummed his last stroke of his guitar for the night. I was wild. Unfortunately, the clip have to share with you does not scratch the surface of the experience that is Curt Chambers, and he/show is indeed and experience.

With real rock star flare, Curt hit the stage like he was on fire with a burning desire to give the audience a treat. One of the recipients of that treat received an erotic guitar locked rhythmic cavort that made me blush and simply say “WOW”. With audience of hair tossing, rock out, rock hard, soul-rock lovers, Curt let us experience more than his rock star flare and let us know there is reason he is a singer. He can sing. While the activity of his lively show reflected at times in his vocal delivery, it was not enough to sway us from us listening. He was that act that made you leave with something to tell your friends about that goes beyond recommending his music and show, but forced you say, “Seriously. Curt Chambers is off the chain!” And we loved every minute of it. He has a following and I can see why.

Jesse Boykins III and Curt Chambers were dynamic, leaving us wanting more. It was an explosion of talent, passion and desire wrapped in the sweet vocals and provocative strums of the guitar. FIYA!...FIYA!...FIYA…!

If Tuesday's Ear Candy f/ Green Tea and David James and Thursday night's show f/ Jesse Boykins III and Curt Chambers is an indication of where the Baltimore music scene is headed then I am boarding the soul train and enjoying the ride.

A recap from your Soul Rebel. Be Rebelliously Beautiful.
