::EDITORIAL::ROBIN THICKE AND PHARRELL WILLIAMS TRIED TO BLUR THE LINES BETWEEN APPRECIATION AND INFRINGEMENT
by Daniel Harris

"Blurred Lines"
by Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams is one of the best selling singles of all times. Given the current state of music sales today, that is saying a lot. It was nominated for a number of awards, including a Grammy, in 2014. Love it or hate it, there was no escaping its infectious and danceable sound. (You know you two-stepped to it at your uncle's cookout.)

In between all of that two-stepping, similarities and comparisons were drawn between "Blurred Lines" and soul legend Marvin Gaye's 1971 hit "Got To Give It Up." Truthfully, you don't have to be a headphone junkie to draw the same comparison. In fact, Marvin Gaye's estate felt that the 2013 hit single sounded a LOT like Gaye's song, so much that they felt it infringed upon his intellectual property.

Naturally, a lawsuit was brought against Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke. They both recognize the similarities in both songs. In fact, Williams admits that he "channeled that late 70s feeling" when he co-wrote the song.  However, both artists maintain that they did not copy Gaye's music. This past Tuesday, a Los Angeles jury decided in favor of the Gaye family and awarded them $7.3 million in damages.

Howard E. King, who represented Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams in this matter, is "reviewing the decision" and will consider their options. That's lawyer talk for he's going to appeal this decision. He believes that this decision sets a "horrible precedent for music and creativity" for other artists. Seriously, any fool could hear that these two songs sound very similar.

Mr. King is being very dramatic in his statement about music and creativity. There is a fine line between drawing inspiration from an artist or genre and outright copying their work(s).

Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk," which is currently No. 1 on the Billboard charts (and could possibly be No. 1 to get on your nerves by the end of this year) takes heavy cues from artists like Morris Day, Zapp and Roger. It's an homage to 80s Funk and Pop.

When Raphael Saddiq reinvented his sound and gave us The Way I See It and Stone Rollin, it was clear that he drew inspiration from 50s and 60s Soul and Rock and Roll. Saddiq even used analog recording techniques to enhance that experience.

Daptone Records draws inspiration from 60s and 70s Soul. Their studio and recording method is a reminder of days gone by. Their artist roster would remind any music fan of the Stax and Motown era.

Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city and the more recent B4.DA.$$ by Joey Bada$$ are both examples of Hip Hop's Golden Era being brought back to life by an appreciation from a younger generation.

I could go on and on. The point is, the aforementioned artists understood the line between appreciation and infringement. What Pharrell and Robin attempted to get away with was blurring that line under the guise of inspiration.

While Mr. King may have taken his dramatic cues from an 80s soap opera, rest assure, those artists who know and respect the line, those who do not attempt to cross that line, are perfectly safe to create free from fear of reprisal.

I'm sure if Mr. King were representing Pharrell versus the Coca Cola Corporation and this clear rip off of "Happy," he'd change his tune.

::RECAP:: Yuna | Sweet Life Festival & Fans

Photos by Nocturnal Charm

At this year's Sweet Life Festival, Fader Label artist Yuna performed in what happened to be the week her first full length album dropped.

Extremely talented and mesmerizing Yuna drew a crowd full of fan and soon to be fans to the Tree House stage.

She performed songs from her self titled album and to my surprise several audience members sung along with her especially to the closing hit and lead single "Live Your Life" produced by Pharrell Williams.

What was incredibly special about this day was that 5 lucky fans (Monokia, Je, Nakera, Nazaahah, and Qadira) thanks to Fader Label, Cornerstone, and Gypsy Soul were able to attend the festival, view the show and hang out with Yuna.

This was a true experience that they would always remember thanks to Yuna and her team.

::LISTEN & LOAD:: CRIS CAB | ECHO BOOM

As many of you know, here at Gypsy Soul, we love to turn our readers on to refreshing, new artists. So allow us to RE-introduce you to Cris Cab- the 18-year old Miami native that has taken the music world by storm with the release of his new mixtape and second project Echo Boom [DOWNLOAD FREE HERE] Early last year, Gypsy Soul had a the pleasure of introducing him to Baltimore and did a couple of media interactions with him.

Far ahead of his time, sonically, Cab redefines the boundaries of pop music, with his Caribbean flare and profound songwriting. It doesn't hurt that he has received hefty co-signs from industry greats like Pharrell Williams and Wyclef Jean. In fact, Cab's music is the perfect blend of Wyclef's vibrant storytelling, and John Mayer's earthy soulfulness, which is sure to cross demographics and musical genres alike.

The lead single off the mixtape, presented by Pharrell's Billionaire Boys Club, is "In My Dreams;" a lofty acoustic track about the bittersweet comfortability found in dreams, versus the real world. It's beautiful, inspirational and relatable-which appears to be a common thread in all of Cab's work. The mixtape's title track (and rumored next single), "Echo Boom," is equal parts funk, soul and pop, with Pharrell's signature stoic lyricism, stamping his co-sign- "He got my DNA though its my first time seeing him. 'Welcome to I am other,' that's how I greeted him. The new breed, like colorful new weed. We planted them seeds, now we got them new leaves."

Take a listen and enjoy the ride. We don't know where it's leading, but if Cris Cab continues on this path, he's sure to land amongst the stars.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Cris Cab, Pharell's hot new artist. You might be thinking that he is the next new skater boy rap artist but you could not be more wrong. Actually, Cris Cab is an 18 year old soul singer who hails from Miami, FL. Check out what he has to say below:

How long have you been working on your EP and how does is it feel to be finished?

"It feels great! I've been working on it for 7 months and it's my 1st body of work".

How would you classify your music?

"A lil bit of everything - reggae, hip hop, neo soul".

What’s your favorite song on the EP? Why?

"My favorite song would have to be "Life Goes On" It has simple song instrumentation and a strong message. It has a lot to do with an experience with my cousin who traveled and came back".

Are you excited about performing in the DMV?

"Hell yeah. Honestly, I thought the DMV

was like motor vehicle.…had no clue what it was. I don't have a lot of fans there so I'm interested in performing in new markets and developing a fan base.

Do you have a girlfriend?

"I did but not now. Don’t have a lot of time...we recently broke up because of it. It was a mutual break up and we decided to move on. We're still friends though".

In our brief conversation, I learned that Cris Cab is an artist who simply wants you to hear and appreciate his music. Lucky for you, Cris Cab is coming to Baltimore on June 23rd at Bourbon street! But FIRST come SOULCIALIZE with him at Teavolve at 6PM on the 23rd...FREE! Check his site for locations and times. http://criscab.com/home/. While you're checking out his site be sure to download his FREE EP entitled Foreward.
