::GET FAMILIAR:: ASA
by Daniel Harris
Here at TheSoulcialista, we are drawn to artists who defy the norm. We like to keep our audience well-informed on artists who use their gifts and talents responsibly to affect change and continue to bring awareness to music as a true art form. Singer/songwriter/musician Asa (Asha) is no different.
Born Paris, Asa grew up in Nigeria where music seemed to be entrenched in her life. Her days were filled with listening to and learning from artists like Erykah Badu, Femi Kuti, D'Angelo and Lauryn Hill. These musical influences, along with her personal life experiences, combine to create a truly soulful and engaging sound.
Her voice has been described as, "precise and emotionally pure." Composing songs both in English and Yoruba allows for a truly unique and unforgettable experience. For her American audience, understanding Yoruba is not a prerequisite for appreciating her music. Because Asa writes and creates music that comes from her heart, listeners are still able to hear and feel her happiness, her concern, her anguish and her hopes.
Asa is an artist that fully understands and respects the power that music has. Her music is a testament that she embraces the full range of emotions and connections people are bound to have with this art form. Because of this, Asa creates postive music that effectively and responsibly reaches people across the world.
