When an artist is given the space to just and create what naturally comes to them, what tends to result is a beautiful product of self expression and a genuine love for the craft and art of music.
If record sales and singles for Top 40 radio and the pressure to feed the industry were to be taken away, artists would be left with a blank canvas and the freedom to fill it with beautiful art. For tUnE-yArDs, waiting for these more than ideal conditions isn't an option!
Merrill Garbus has performed under the tUnE-yArDs pseudonym since 2006. A multi-instrumentalist, Garbus seemingly creates in a space void of all typical industry destractions and requirements. The combination of digital recorders, mixing software, unusual percussion, guitars and ukuleles, Garbus seamlessly turns the chaotic into a beautiful experimental sound. This "lo-fi experimental folk" only enhances her very powerful and soulful voice.
For her upcoming album Nikki Nack, Garbus translates her recent experiences in Haiti learning vodou drums and dancing and her more stress free creative environment. In an interview with The Guardian, Merrill says, "I've been making an out-of-control mess...Sometimes it feels like a wild beast I cannot begin to tame." Nikki Nack is set to be released May 6th.
