YES!!! I'm Still dancing just by the thought of the Friday night's SOLD OUT show featuring The Foreign Exchange & Friends: Phonte, YahZarah, Darien Brockington, Zo, Nicolay, and Live Band down at the 8x10 club. That night was a night to remember and for those who missed out, I strongly recommend you clear your schedule the next time they are in town....JUNE 19th at the African American Heritage Festival!
First things first, the crowd was live, the place was packed, and it was all full of fun and excitement. DJ Lil Mic of WEAA & Sirus/XM really knew how to get the crowd into the groove. His music selection was on point with back to back jams that had everyone dancing, laughing, joking, and having a good time.
Despite the time the performers hit the stage, they gave us a show that was worth every minute of the wait. The entire performance was fun and engaged. They even spoofed the Saturday Night Live spoof "What's Up With That."
From the moment they walked on stage until it was time for them to exit the stage, their energy level remained on 100% and there wasn't a dull moment. The audience was hyped and participating throughout the show.
Mid-way through the show, they introduced the Live Band members and jumped into a solo featuring YahZarah performing a few singles off of her latest album THE BALLAD OF PURPLE SAINT JAMES including "Why Dontcha Call Me No More" and the duet "All Of My Days" with Darien. As a big supporter of Yahzarah I was so excited that she was able to showcase her new album recently released on The Foreign Exchange Music label. Once she was finished with her solo segment Darien Brockington and Phonte both did tracks that gave them the spot light. One of Gypsy Soul's fav's is "Come Around" that gives Darien his time to shine.
What was so enjoyable during each performance were the dances and energy from YahZarah, Darien Brockington, and Phonte. Their show was designed to entertain the multi-generational audience and tailored parts of their show to specific gernations. For the younger generation who listens to mainstream radio they took songs like "Turn My Swag On" by Soulja Boy , "Invented Sex" by Trey Songz, and a few other most played Hip-Hop and R&B songs and put a Neo-Soul spin to it. I thought that was really creative and shed light on how ridiculous some of the lyrics are in music today. For the older crowd, they took us back to some back of the day jams and they showed love to Baltimore by singing "Tell Me" by Dru Hill.
After the performance, we went backstage to converse and take a few pictures with the performers and live band members. We mingled with the crowd for a little bit and enjoyed the music provided by DJ Lil Mic during the after party.
