::SOUND CHECK:: Cilla K: THE Fine Line

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Meet Cilla K, hailing from Guadeloupe by way of New York City. The songstress polished her skills in Paris, and was later discovered in New York by producer David Patillo. Not only is this French -West Indian vocalist a singer/songwriter AND Model, she’s a beatmaker; claiming credits for 7 out of the 15 tracks on her new LP Fine Line. This album dismisses the notion of traditional hip -hop with its mixture of soul and jazz, and a sprinkle of electro.

The debut LP Fine Line, partly produced by Junious Bervine (N.E.R.D., Floetry, Common) blends her affinity for infectious beats, and her international background. She made sure to pay homage to her French and West Indian roots by singing partially in French on the song Demain. Her distinctive voice stands on It’s own on the track ‘Child of the Universe’ as she croons: I’ve come from a long way/ I’ve been walking for miles/ doesn’t mater how far/I’m a child of the Universe.”

Coincidentally, the title track ‘Fine Line’ is one of my least favorites, the album took on somewhat of a minimalist approach at times, but this track was too basic. In my opinion the title track should always be the strongest, after all it bears the identity of the album. The rest of the album compensates with more than enough rumbling bass lines, and funky horns on my favorite tracks such as Nomad, ironically because it is simplistic, and Drive You Home Remix, because of its off-beat nature.

Cilla K has an undeniable funky freshness, and is sure to make a lasting impression. Check out her Myspace page for a listen!
