Kentaivus Jones. If you haven't heard of him, you should definitely start doing your research.
At last night's first Ear Candy of 2009, Kentavius Jones created an intimate, acoustic setting as he set up his guitar and serenaded the room. There was a good crowd at Teavolve last night but as soon as he started singing, they were the furthest thing from my mind!
Honestly, I didn't even know what to except when I first saw him. He seemed like a pretty nice guy as he walked around the lounge and got in a few practices strums on his guitar. And yeah, I listened to a couple of his tracks on his myspace page, but to hear his voice live, and raw.... AMAZING. It's the perfect mix of rock and soul that comes out husky and sensual...yep, this was definitely a show for the ladies to take in!
My favorite song of the night - Floor - "It's about this girl I met a wedding. I didn't even know her name. We just danced all night" Kenatvius told me after his show. Most of his songs - which by the way, he writes - are taken from personal experiences and encounters with females.
You know the song they play during wedding reception scenes in movies? Yeah this song "Floor" is perfect for that scene. "I don't need your name, nor your zodiac sign" ... "we get lost on this floor, dance outside the lines.." are the full, husky vocals which pushed over the sound of his guitar. I might not have been lost on the dance floor but I was most certainly lost in his words! Kudos to the songwriter!
And with Valentine's Day creeping up on us, the dim lights created the perfect setting as Kentavius began to sing - Secret - "this business, is our business" ... c'mon, we're grown, you already know where this was going! But what really made this song was watching him as he got lost in his guitar solo (strumming my pain with his finger...) This man is truly a talent!
But what's all my raving about if I don't give a taste for yourself? Here's a small preview of what I got to experience. (Footage is really dark, but listen to his voice!)
So clearly, the man is talented! Singer, songwriter, what is his personality like?
I got a chance to pick his brain for a minute after his show and swarm of interviews. He was clearly winding down from the action but still held a very animated attitude. The oldest of 5 brothers, Kentavius is from Easton, MD but trips to New York City are his favorite. And why not? All the shopping and food and people! NYC is his spot. But mom's home cooking is his favorite cuisine!
But when he is not checking out the shops in NYC or getting full on momma's cuisine, you can find him the gym! And it shows! I pretty sure he knew I was going to look at his arms after he said that, and I did, and yes, he definitely works out! (Oh, and he's 26 - Mickey you owe me a nickel! It's a recession so I'm definitely collecting!!)
And what's on Kenativus' Ipod? "Definitely Jeff Buckley and Radiohead" he said, as our conversation winds down. (Thanks for finally returning my pen Mr. Kentavius!)Make sure you check him out--- www.myspace.com/kentaviusjones
